Have you heard about the Rottweiler Great Dane Mix and are planning to get one? If so, this article will tell you all that you need to know about the animal.

What is the Rottweiler Great Dane Mix? This dog is the product of the cross between the Rottweiler and the Great Dane. This hybrid will be both very large and muscular due to the parent breeds with an aloof, confident and good-natured personality.

We’ll go over the features of the Rottweiler and the Great Dane and then that of the offspring to know the type of features the hybrid could possess. Needless to say, this is a powerhouse of an animal.

Features of the Rottweiler and the Great Dane

Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a large and strong dog with a variety of temperaments that many people do not know about. Temperaments of this breed include playfulness, loyalty, calmness, intelligence, goofiness, obedience, courageousness, etc. If you want an affectionate and loyal large dog, then the Rottweiler will fill that position perfectly.

The Rottweiler is big, and so as adults, these dogs can be as tall as 22 inches to 27 inches, with the females usually being smaller than the males. There are always exceptions to this though, and it is not impossible to find a female that is larger than a male of the same age, even within the same litter.

The weight of these animals falls between 80 pounds to 135 pounds when they are fully grown. As regards looks, this good-looking pooch has a short, mostly black coat with tan markings and floppy ears. An undesirable characteristic in the Rottie is stubbornness, but that trait will only manifest if you fail to train your dog properly.

Great Dane

The Great Dane is a giant dog whose strength and size belies the calm and gentle temperament of the animal. This dog breed towers above many other breeds and can grow as tall as 32 inches at the shoulders. On average, Great Danes will usually grow to be as tall as 26 inches to 34 inches and will weigh as much as 100 pounds to 200 pounds.

As with most large and giant-sized dogs, the Great Dane will not have the long life expectancy of other smaller animals like the Chihuahua. Expect your dog to live for anything between 7 to 10 years, depending on the care and affection the animal receives. The fur in this dog is smooth and short with different colors such as blue, brindle, fawn, and black, among others.

The personality of this breed is truly amazing and sweet, and the Great Dane is a true example of a gentle giant. This is not to say that the animal will take the safety of family members lightly, though. As noted by the American Kennel Club,

“Despite their sweet nature, Danes are alert home guardians. Just the sight of these gentle giants is usually enough to make intruders think twice. But those foolish enough to mistake the breed’s friendliness for softness will meet a powerful foe of true courage and spirit.”

The personality of the Dane includes playfulness, gentility, an eager-to-please attitude, affection, friendliness, etc. These animals are easy to groom because of their short hair, and they are light to moderate shedders. Undesirable features in Great Danes include a short lifespan, bloating, and health complications.

The Rottweiler Great Dane Mix

This hybrid is also called the Weiler Dane and is a giant hybrid, which is reasonable considering that both parents are large-sized dogs. The large size of the Weiler Dane makes the animal a great guard dog, and so if you love large dogs or are looking for a guard dog, then you should consider this hybrid.

The animal has a mix of features from both the Rottweiler and the Great Dane. We already established that the animal is huge. The Weiler Dane inherits the imposing height of the Great Dane and the weight and muscle of the Rottweiler. What this means is that Weiler Danes can grow as tall as 33 inches in adulthood and weigh up to 145 pounds to 165 pounds. Depending on which parent’s genes are stronger, the animal may be taller and weightier than the given figures, or shorter and weigh less than the figures.

In terms of looks, the Weiler Dane has a denser and shorter coat than those of the Rottweiler and Great Dane. The coat color is mostly black with bronze markings like that of the Rottie, but it is not unheard of to see Weiler Danes with a coat color that is closer to brown. The ears of this hybrid are floppy and the head large.

The temperament of the Rottweiler Great Dane Mix

Although many people think that large dogs are always aggressive, this is far from the truth when it comes to Weiler Danes. Both parents of this dog are not naturally aggressive, and the hybrid inherits this easy-going nature from them. The Weiler Dane has the following temperaments:

  • Gentleness: Like the Great Dane, the Weiler Dane is a gentle giant. The animal’s size may be formidable, but this gentle nature makes the dog a great addition to any family, even one with children, as the dog will be gentle around them.

Although the Weiler Dane loves to play with and adores children, it is probably best not to leave the dog unsupervised around very young children. This is because, although the animal may not mean to hurt the kids, its sheer size can cause them to fall while playing.

  • Loyalty and protectiveness: The Weiler Dane has profound love and affection for family members and will gladly protect against intruders. The size of the dog is imposing too, and the animal, although not one that barks frequently, has a very loud and fearful bark that will deter intruders.

Therefore, if you want a gentle and fierce-looking dog to guard your house, then the Weiler Dane will be an awesome choice for you and your family.

  • Hardworking: These large dogs are hardworking and can perform chores like hunting and herding in places like farms.
  • An eager-to-please attitude: The Great Dane has an eager-to-please attitude, and the Weiler Dane takes after its parent in this aspect. You can harness this eager-to-please attitude when your dog is still a puppy to practice obedience training.

Other temperaments of the Weiler Dane include goofiness, playfulness, and intelligence. Undesirable traits of the Weiler Dane include:

  • Stubbornness: The Rottweiler Great Dane mix can be quite stubborn, especially if you do not give the animal the proper training at the right time. To combat stubbornness in the dog, it is best to practice obedience training, right from when the animal is still very young.
  • Aggressiveness if not properly trained: It is the responsibility of a dog owner to ensure that pooches under their care are properly trained and socialized. Failure to do this will usually result in aggressiveness towards other animals and even strangers. The protective and loyal nature of the Weiler Dane means that not socializing the animal will cause aggression towards strangers and anything that remotely resembles a threat.

Lifespan and Care of the Rottweiler Great Dane Mix

Lifespan

Giant-sized dogs do not live for as long as smaller-sized ones do. The Weiler Dane is a large-sized dog, and the average lifespan for this hybrid is between 7 years to 10 years. Of course, to live for this number of years, the dog must be taken care of very well.

This means that you should feed your pooch with high-quality dog food, provide adequate accommodation with enough space to roam about and play, give the dog enough exercise and pay attention to the animal. Also, visits to the vet should not be taken for granted. If you suspect that there is something wrong with your pet, it is always a good idea to take the animal to the vet to rule out any health challenges.

Grooming

Weiler Danes are moderate shedders, and so it is best that you brush your dog’s coat a few times a week. You should also brush your dog’s teeth frequently to prevent bad breath. Trimming of the nails is also important to prevent breakage and consequently, pain for your dog.

Feeding

Every dog requires quality food in the right amount in order to grow normally. With the large size and high energy level of this hybrid, the animal should be fed an adequate amount of food twice a day.

Exercise requirements

All dogs require some amount of exercise every day to keep fit and release their pent-up energy. The Weiler Dane is not an exception, and the animal requires daily exercise. This exercise could be in the form of long daily walks. Failure to walk the animal frequently can lead to your pooch exhibiting destructive behaviors like chewing and unnecessary barking.

Because this is a giant-sized dog, it is best if you have a yard in which your pooch can play and roam. Also, provide your dog with a range of doggie toys which the animal can play with, and make sure to spend enough time playing with your dog each day since Weiler Danes thrive on attention.

Training

Weiler Danes are easy to train as puppies because they have an eager-to-please attitude. This is why it is best to train and socialize them when they are young.  Obedience training is a must as these dogs tend to be stubborn as adults without it. Since Weiler Danes are intelligent, it will be easy enough for your pooch to grasp these concepts.

Health challenges

Hybrids usually have better health than purebred parents, and so many of the diseases that plague the Rottweiler and Great Dane may not affect the Weiler Dane. Nonetheless, the hybrid will still be susceptible to some of these diseases. Health challenges that Rottweiler Great Dane Mixes may be subject to include ones like hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis, hypothyroidism, and bloat, among others.

Conclusion

Rottweiler Great Dane mixes are giant-sized and gentle dogs that inherited the gentle nature of the Great Dane parent. This does not mean that the animal will not defend family members if there is a threat. The Dane Weiler makes a very good guard dog, partially because of the imposing size of this animal and also because of the dog’s loud bark whenever a threat is perceived.

The hybrid is also a great family dog, because of its gentle nature and protectiveness. You can depend on your pooch to defend your family and deter potential threats. Just ensure that you give the animal the necessary care, attention, and training, and you will have a loyal protector whom your entire family would love.
