hey, i’m writing from Brisbane,Queensland Australia and I have a question…
my rottie, Boris, is very young 18 weeks and have only had him 4 days but whenever we leave the house he whines and whines and whines on, for example the other day I was walking our other dog and he whined and when we got home he was in the same position whining do you know anyway to stop whining or is it just a time thing???
Hi Mikee
I’m not sure if your puppy is 8 weeks or 18 weeks because he looks very young in the photo and you say you’ve only had him 4 days.
But regardless of his age, the answer is basically the same – he’s lonely and stressed from coming into a new home and being with new people and that’s why he’s whining. All puppies go through a bit of an adjustment period during the first week or so and may be sleepy, anxious, lose their appetite and so on. It usually settles down after a while.
Don’t give in to his whining as that will reinforce the behavior, but also make sure he gets plenty of love and attention at other times so that he feels secure and loved. Some puppies and dogs can suffer from separation anxiety, but I wouldn’t worry too much that he’s headed down that road just yet.
Just remember he’s a tiny baby and give him time to settle in and feel secure. Love and patience is a necessity. If you’d like tips and advice on caring for your new little one, check out my Taking Care Of A Puppy page.
Best of luck with Boris he looks like a sweetheart.
