Rottweiler Puppy Limping

by Arun
(Kerala, India)

Hi,

I have a 7 month old Rottweiler puppy. He started limping 2 days back. Sometimes he's ok, but sometimes not. He'll jump but after one or two jumps, will stop.

I am feeding him Royal Canin Rottweiler 31, which I started only a month ago. Could this be an issue? I heard puppy foods will result in rapid growths and could cause limping. So If I stop giving him this food, he'll be OK?

Thanks
Arun

Hi Arun
If the food you are using meets the guidelines on my Feeding Puppies page (and as it's specifically designed for Rottweiler pup it should), then it's unlikely that the food is responsible for this sudden limping.

It's more likely your puppy has hurt himself, perhaps strained a ligament or twisted a joint. I'd recommend that you don't allow him to be jumping, or to gallop around for now, give him a chance to heal. But I'd also strongly suggest taking him to your vet for a check up just to make sure he hasn't done any real damage.

Rottie pups are big and clumsy, and slipping, twisting or falling are common. When that happens they can end up limping for a few days due to a minor injury, or can tear ligaments which result in much more serious problems and may require surgery. As your pup doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain and is walking etc. normally, then I hope that it's a minor issue.

Hope this helps and that he's doing much better soon.
