Dog Training Tools – What To Buy and How To Use Them

Dog training tools play a very important part in how successful your dog training efforts are….. using the wrong dog training equipment or techniques can make training your puppy, or dog, a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Luckily when it comes to Rottweiler training, you are already ‘ahead of the pack’ because your puppy (or dog) is highly intelligent and this breed is usually very responsive and focused on you. This is a great advantage, so make the most of it :o)

When it comes to training your Rottweiler puppy, you’ll get the best results when you have a few basics in place, these include:

  • Know the breed-specific traits of your dog. (See Rottweiler Dogs)
  • Understand the way your dog thinks and acts
  • Use positive, rewards-based dog training methods. (See Free Puppy Training Tips)
  • Have the right dog training tools at hand

Training can be divided into several different areas. There’s potty training a dog, puppy obedience training, agility dog training, clicker dog training, dog behavior training, shutzhund training …. and more.

And each individual category has it’s own set of dog training tools and techniques. On this page I’ve put together some tips, plus links to some of the best dog training tools, equipment and supplies around. Hopefully this will make your experience of Rottweiler training easier.

Dog Training Tools For Housebreaking

Housebreaking your puppy (also known as ‘puppy potty training’) is one of the very first, and most important, training tasks a new owner has.

It’s very important to start out the right way, as puppies are quick learners…. and they learn the wrong things just as quickly as they do the right things!

For a detailed look at how to housebreak your pup, or dog, you need to visit my Housebreaking A Puppy page. It has all the tips, advice and information you need to get your little guy (or gal) started out the right way.

Having the right dog training tools on hand before you bring your puppy home makes a world of difference! The most important items include a dog crate (highly recommended!), odor/stain remover, dog play-pen or exercise pen and dog training treats. Optional products, which depend on your individual situation could include a ‘puppy training aid’ (which helps your pup learn where you expect him to eliminate), puppy training pads or a doggie litter box.

Dog Training Tools For Obedience Training

As soon as you bring that little puppy home, you need to begin basic puppy obedience training.

Puppies aren’t born knowing how to live alongside humans and obey our rules – after all they’re little dogs, not little humans!

But they ARE extremely intelligent, and always eager to please their new owners – so that little furball will learn fast.

Start out by helping your puppy to learn his/her name, and then move onto basic obedience commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’, and ‘come’ and leash-walking. Visit my Free Puppy Training Tips and Leash Training A Puppy pages for lots of help with all of this.

You don’t need a whole bunch of dog training tools on day one, a simple collar and leash and some treats are enough to begin with. And do remember to only use positive rewards-based dog training techniques ([easyazon_link identifier=”1548807125″ locale=”US” tag=”alor0d-20″]Clicker Dog Training [/easyazon_link]is popular today, and it’s simple and fun to learn).

As you and your pup get to know each other and master the basics, you should enroll him/her in a formal obedience class. These are a great way for you both to improve your relationship and learn and have fun in a controlled setting. It’s also a very valuable socialization experience for your pup.

Here’s some basic dog training equipment choices that you may want to consider once you’ve gone beyond ‘sit’…

I’m a fan of Cesar Millan and his approach to dog training, and I’ve recently been paying attention to one of his dog training tools which is a ‘new and improved’ version of a training collar and leash combo.

Many Rottweiler owners (and owners of other big, strong breeds) have difficulty controlling their puppy or dog on walks. Of course proper obedience training takes care of this in time, but even the best trained dog can occasionally decide to dash off after a squirrel or take a dislike to a dog across the street…. potentially causing havoc.

Whether you struggle with a pulling puppy, or just want a bit of extra ‘insurance’ that you’ll be able to control your Rottie in any situation, I think you’ll be interested in this product…

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B075WZW54X” locale=”US” tag=”alor0d-20″]The Illusion Dog Collar & Leash Set (Next Generation)[/easyazon_link] is a cleverly constructed ‘double collar’ which puts gentle, but firm, pressure on your dog’s neck in just the right place/s.

From the research I’ve done, it seems to be a viable alternative to a prong collar, and is simple to use yet very effective.

I’ve not actually tested this myself, but do intend to! Meanwhile I’d be interested to hear feedback from any Rottie owners who have given it a trial run. You can get in touch with me through my Contact Me page if you have comments or would like to submit a review for this product…..

Leash training is an important part of training your puppy, but it can be tricky at times. So, to make sure you get off on the right foot (or paw) with your Rottweiler puppy, I’d recommend paying a visit to my Leash Training A Puppy page, where you’ll find lots of helpful tips and advice.

Dog Training Treats

No discussion of dog training tools would be complete without talking about dog training treats!

Everybody now realizes that puppies and dogs learn best when they are rewarded for good behavior, rather than punished for the bad.

Rewards-based training is the only method that reputable dog trainers and behavioral specialists recommend, and although the reward doesn’t have to be food, it’s a popular choice!

As with dog food though, it’s important to choose sensibly when you’re picking out treats for your Rottweiler (or any other breed for that matter). Dog training treats can contain all sorts of chemicals, colorings, additives and so on and it’s just as possible for these to cause canine allergies or tummy upsets as it is for dog food.

Here are a two excellent choices, and a dog treat pouch is a simple and convenient way to carry them around. I know what it’s like to take pants or shorts out of the washing machine only to find that I left a handful of dog treats in a pocket – not pretty!

Remember that training isn’t just something you do when your puppy is young….. it’s a life-long and on-going process.

Puppies are like little ‘sponges’ and they soak up everything that’s going on around them. BUT, older adolescent pups or dogs can most definitely learn too – it may take a little more time patience but the saying ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ isn’t strictly true!

Something that I think is worth pointing out is that Rottweilers are big dogs, and unless you’re physically very fit or strong, you’ll find it easier to train your Rottie while he’s small and ‘portable’.

Once he has learned the basics, and respects and obeys you, you’ll both enjoy a lifetime of learning and interaction. It’s a win-win situation.

Luckily there are a huge variety of dog training tools available to todays’ dog owners and the items I’ve showcased above are just the tip of the iceberg. You can see a selection of great books on puppy care and dog training, that I’ve reviewed and recommended, on my Rottweiler Books page.

I hope you enjoy exploring this page and that you take the time to research and look at all the great dog training equipment that’s at your disposal. Have fun.
