Does my Rottweiler look Pure and Healthy ?
I bought a rottweiler puppy 3 days ago at a Puppy Store, They sold me him with the papers showing he was a Rottweiler.
He is 3 months and 2 weeks old and only weighs about 19 pounds. when i bought him he looked kind of skinny, i could see his ribs. I just started to feed him Nutro Ultra large puppy breed kibbles and can food, he loves it and i am hoping he gains more weight.
Do it look like a pure breed rottweiler and healthy ? Thanks
If you have AKC registration papers for this pup, then chances are both his parents are purebred Rottweilers.... but unfortunately when you're not buying directly from a reputable breeder there are no guarantees. Pet stores are more likely to be getting their puppies from 'puppy mills' or less-than-honorable breeders so there is more of an element of risk in terms of health, genetic defects etc. etc.
HOWEVER, your little guy does look like a Rottweiler puppy. He's a bit underweight in my personal opinion, but other than that he looks fine. Now that you are feeding him better he should put on weight and fill out some.
I'd recommend that you read both my Feeding Puppies and Best Puppy Food pages to learn more about what your pup needs in the way of nutrition.
Have your veterinarian give this little guy a check up too, and make sure he's had all his canine vaccinations and has been dewormed properly. Other than that as long as he's happy and active, eating and drinking properly and doesn't have digestive problems, I would assume he's healthy. He looks fine but obviously that's not something I can really tell by looking at a photo.
I'd also suggest that you read my Taking Care Of A Puppy page for tips and advice on puppy care in general. Do also bear in mind that Rottweilers are very slow to mature and develop and that your pup won't be fully grown until he's at least 2 years old.
During this time he will often look a bit scrawny, or out-of-proportion as he'll get taller faster than he'll get heavier. That is perfectly normal and as long as he's eating a premium puppy food for large breed pups he will be getting everything he needs to reach his full potential.
Rotties are great dogs and very smart, make sure that you begin training him right away and get him enrolled in a basic obedience class too. Get free puppy training tips here!
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your new puppy.
