5 month old Rottie Pees Everywhere

by Maria
(Gypsum, Colorado)

We have worked on house-training since day one! Brought her home at about 14 weeks. She can be outside all day, and as soon as she comes inside, she pees.

She pees when you come up to pet her sometimes, or to put her in crate. Vet says she will grow out of this. She even pees all over our deck. Any thoughts?

We have an 8 month old crawler so we're hoping to get this issue resolved fast!

Hi Maria
It sounds as though your pup's peeing is due 'nerves' or anxiety, rather than a housebreaking problem.

This is something called 'submissive urination' and is fairly common in pups especially those who have a fairly submissive or anxious personality. It's a reflexive action over which she has no control, and is actually her way of showing deference to authority. Your vet is right in that most puppies do grow out of this as they mature and become more confident.

However there are lots of things you can do to help speed up this process, and also understand that some reactions you may have (such as anger, frustration etc.) will actually make it worse.

Check out this webpage... Dog Submissive Urination to learn more about this problem and what to do about it.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your puppy.
